Frequently Asked Questions about the Science Fair:
- When is the science fair? The 2014-2015 6th Grade Science Fair will be held in mid-May; it takes place during the Enrichment Fair.
- When do students start the project? Students learn about the scientific method for the first quarter and will start their science projects in second quarter.
- Who participates the 6th grade science fair? Only GT students complete the science fair project. This is one of the major differences between regular science and GT science. Students are required to write research papers, do advanced math, think critically, and manage their time appropriately.
- What is the topic this year? This year students will designing a solar cooker that will be able to heat a water bottle.
- Is this project done at school or at home? Assignments will be completed both in class and at home. The experiment itself will be conducted in class.
- Is this a group project? Students conduct the experiment/collect data as a group, but all assignments will be completed individually.
- How large are the groups? Students will be allowed to choose groups of 3-5.
- What does the group work entail? Each group will work together to build and test their own cookers. Each student in the group will be expected to record their own data.
- What does the individual work entail? Each student will be conducting their own background research, writing their own papers, and analyzing their group's data independently.
- Why can't students work by themselves? There are a few reasons: Building the cookers together in school saves students time and resources. Glenwood only has 8 LabQuest temperature probes. Students will have other individuals working on the same project to bounce ideas off.
- Do students have to make a science fair board? No! Students are now expected to create a website instead of a typical board. All students will create a website using the VERY user-friendly site www.weebly.com. While free weebly sites are available, Glenwood pays for students to have a pro account that has a few more special features.
- How will I know about due dates? Due dates will be given to students in class. Students are expected to record all due dates in their science fair binder. Due dates will also be posted on my website.
